Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS)
The Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) is a fundamental step in comprehending the volume and weight of waste generated by various sources such as households, institutions, and industries. Conducting a WACS is essential for effective waste management, as mandated by The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 or RA 9003. This study serves as the basis for all governance and engineering interventions related to waste.
By understanding the rate of waste generation, the design of resource recovery facilities and sanitary landfills can be customized for each Local Government Unit (LGU) or specific waste source. In the image, Ridge to Reef Environmental Consultancy, Inc. is shown conducting a WACS for one of its clients, highlighting their commitment to responsible waste management.
