R2R's Marine Turtle Preservation Program
By Dana Gabrielle B. Tautho
For the past two years, Ridge to Reef, Incorporated. (R2R) has initiated advocacy in helping monitor the conservation efforts of marine turtles in the coastline of Brgy Inawayan and Darong, Sta.Cruz, Davao Del Sur. This year, we were able to successfully released 165 marine turtle individuals in collaboration with LGU Sta. Cruz, Brgys. Darong and Inawayan, Sta. Cruz, Davao Del Sur. The latest hatchling release was just last week, July 29, 2021.
Thanks to the active involvement of trained community leaders, with special mention to Mr. Mil Onutan the BFARMC Chair at Barangay Darong, Sta.Cruz, Davao del Sur. Jamil's sustained efforts to protect the nesting ground and monitor turtle eggs paved the way to the successful releases of these marine turtle hatchlings. R2R and the Barangay hope that these initiatives will continue and will encourage other community members to participate and be involved in the management and protection of these marine turtle eggs.
It is worth mentioning that these activities jumpstarted after the Marine Turtle Conservation Program, funded by Therma South, Inc. (TSI), AbotizPower, was implemented by R2R in 2019. Since then, the community has already released around 200 hatchlings. With these coastal communities now more aware and knowledgeable about the proper management of these important marine lives, the communities to meaningfully support the government's effort to conserve and protect these marine resources. Therefore, continuing advocacy and support are also needed from all sectors to help extend some assistance to these concerned communities by providing some incentives for their efforts to ensure sustainability.
